Newer vehicles increasingly protect write-level diagnostic functions behind security gateways. Reading codes is usually easier; commanding active tests, resets, relearns, or module service functions can require an authorized tool, current software, and a valid account. That is why gateway support belongs near the top of the buying checklist for 2018+ Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler vehicles.

A listing that says FCA AutoAuth is a good start, not a guarantee. The scanner still needs current software, the right region, an account setup path, and support for the specific module function. If the seller title mentions AutoAuth but the manufacturer page is vague, ask support before buying. For safety-related work, verify before the vehicle is apart.

If you maintain a newer Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Chrysler long term, a gateway-capable midrange tablet is easier to justify. If you mainly work on older vehicles, gateway support may not matter yet. If you diagnose friends' vehicles or run side jobs, gateway support becomes a revenue-protection feature instead of a spec-sheet bonus.
